Lithographs

Lithography has long been recognised by artists as a versatile and fruitful extension of one’s drawing practice; as it allows an unparalleled freedom of mark-handling and tonal development – quite different to the other print processes.

Brian Michael Clarke has recently returned to lithography after last rediscovering lithographic techniques in a college environment. He prefers stone lithography as the subtlety and directness of mark-making the stone’s surface offers is unmatched; catching, as it does, the slightest and most delicate nuances of the hand.

His long history of working in other print techniques (etching and monoprinting) has allowed him to respond more keenly to the different capabilities of lithography and so to utilise the potential of the medium to realise works of singular richness, delicacy and depth.
